The story doesn’t really begin until about pages in, and then the action and plot I had been so desperately waiting for felt rushed and under-explored.

The plots and counterplots he’s embroiled in come to a head at the port’s spring festival, when all the nobles must take part in a grand procession to the sea, carrying the festival effigies of Drowned Ammet and Libby Beer to be cast into the harbor. Coincidentally, I had just read The Amet for the first time Oct 01, Justine rated it it was amazing. There’s a bit of a reveal toward the end of the book, and I found that to be slightly unbelievable as well.
There are few truly noble characters in this book, and I love I discovered this book at the same time The Crown of Drrowned came out. Meanwhile, Hildy and Ynen are re-united with Navis, who tells them that they were lucky to escape Holand alive, as Harl had been planning to kill them.

There’s still something so different about this book to the other books of Jones’ that I can think of. I like going on unexpected journeys. Family drama, peril on the high seas, ancient magics awakened – there’s a lot of action packed into these pages. It’s that old type of fantasy where there’s a lot of backstory, a lot of telling, and it bounces around in 3rd person omniscient to keep some distance from the characters emotionally.
Many of her earlier children’s books were out of print in recent years, but have now been re-issued for the young audience whose interest in fantasy and reading was spurred by Harry Potter.
